FAQ

(Kopie 1)

How long does the course of study last?

The regular time for the course of study is six semesters (three years) full-time. This includes an obligatory semester abroad and two internships in Germany and abroad, each lasting 12 weeks.

When does the course begin?

It begins each year on 1.10. at the beginning of the winter semester.

What degree am I awarded?

At a private, officially recognised university of applied sciences such as the EBC University, all courses end with the Bachelor of Arts, as accredited by the FIBAA. This degree is assessed with 180 ECTS credits.

Are there semester vacations?

Between the individual semester blocks there are periods without lessons of up to two weeks and naturally Easter and Christmas holidays. The latter are at the same time as school holidays. After the summer semester you have no lessons from the middle of June to the end of September. In this time you complete your internships, lasting 12 weeks. The remaining time is at your disposal.

What foreign-language knowledge do I need?

You need good to very good English knowledge. That means that you should have a good basis in grammar and simple conversation. Your knowledge is tested in the course of our selection procedure. No previous knowledge is required for Spanish. French is offered as an elective. As a second required foreign language in addition to English, previous knowledge of French is also required. The EBC University offers various Vorbereitungskurse for the foreign languages.

Can I take Spanish instead of French?

At the EBC, English (1st required subject) and Spanish, French or Chinese are mandatory subjects (2nd required elective). A 3rd foreign language can be taken as an elective. In the course of study “Fashion, Luxury and Retail Management”, Italian (no previous knowledge required) is the 2nd foreign language. So in general you must take at least two foreign languages in each course of study.

How is my work tested?

What you have learnt is tested at the end of every semester in the form of written examinations, oral examinations, presentations, talks or assignments. The named exam formats may be combined. The examination phase usually lasts two weeks.

Can I repeat written exams?

Should you fail a written exam, you can repeat this exam at a later point in time. More detailed information on conditions can be found in our study and examination regulations. Should you fail a written examination at the third attempt, you are exmatriculated. According to the law on tertiary education, you may then not be matriculated again at any other German university in your course of study. It is therefore very important and advisable to prepare for your exams carefully.

Is there any way of financing my studies?

When you study at the EBC University, you must pay tuition fees. A great number of banks support students through special educational loans. You can also apply for state support through ´BAföG´. And naturally in your time as a student – until you are 25 – your parents will also receive child benefit. During the course of study you can apply for ERASMUS support for the internships and semester abroad, as long as you stay within the EU. You can find detailed information about Studienfinanzierungde/studium/unser-studium/studiengebuehren-finanzierung.html on our internet page.

Can I apply for »BAföG«?

Students at the EBC University have the right to apply for financial support according to the Federal Law on the Promotion of Education (BAföG). Please apply for this at the Studierendenwerk Hamburg, Grindelallee 9, 20146 Hamburg.

Do I get support in looking for internships?

The search for an internship needs individual initiative and the power to convince. Both qualities are developed in the course of your studies, so that you are able to acquire internships on your own. At the EBC University, our Career Centers in our locations can give you help, but we do not arrange internships.

Are there additional tuition fees for the semester abroad?

For some EBC Partner-Universities in Europe there are no additional fees. Outside Europe there are usually additional costs for you, which vary between €500 and €3,500, depending on the university (as of Oct. 2010).

Is there a student hostel?

In consultation with the partner universities it may be possible to arrange for students to find places in student hostels, but that cannot be guaranteed. But we will naturally be happy to support you in looking for accommodation. Many partner universities offer detailed information for anyone searching for private accommodation or act as agents for rooms (usually for a fee).

Do I combine the subjects to study myself?

No. You receive a prescribed curriculum and study according to a fixed timetable. You are obliged to take examinations in every semester on the subjects you have studied.

Are teaching materials/books supplied by the university?

Each lecturer usually works with textbooks and/or scripts. The textbooks must be bought or borrowed. In addition, you can use our intranet, in which lecturers sometimes upload their scripts, make important comments on examinations or draw attention to important literature. At each location there is a library from which you can borrow books and magazines.

Is it possible to get a student ticket?

Students at the EBC University receive a semester ticket for a fee (see Fee Regulations). The prices for the use of the semester ticket are laid down by the relevant public transport authority. The semester ticket is not included in the tuition fees.

Do I get a student ID card? What price reductions are there?

Yes, you get a student ID card with photograph, which offers price reductions for events or event locations such as cinemas, museums, etc. In addition, you can use the student ID card to borrow media from university libraries at the location and to participate in university sports activities.

Are there minimum admission qualifications?

No. Admission to the courses of study offered by the EBC University is not restricted. That means that there are no minimum admission qualifications. The Aufnahmeverfahren (admission procedure) of the EBC University, which must be successfully completed by every applicant, gives us an all-round profile of that person.

What average grade must I have in my school-leaving examination?

What is important for us is high motivation to study, commitment when studying and willingness to perform well and not necessarily an excellent average grade. In the Beratungsgespräch (consultation) you have the chance to find out all about us and then make a conscious decision.

Do I need to do an internship before I start studying?

No. You don´t need to do an internship in advance. Each of our courses of study includes two internships, one in Germany and one abroad and each lasting 12 weeks.

Changing universities: are my credits recognised if I change to the EBC?

In principle they are, but they must be carefully checked by us. Please send us an up-to-date list of your completed studies and a description of the subjects you took (Course Outlines) by e-mail. The Studienberater de/studium/unser-studium/studienberatung.html(student counsellors) in the various locations are happy to answer any questions you may have.
