PXL Hogeschool, Belgium
Studying in Hasselt
The name might still be unknown to many potential visitors, but the small, cosy town in the Limburg region (Belgium) forms the western part of the EUREGIO Meuse-Rhine and is thus located at the border triangle of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. It takes about 30 minutes by car to reach Liège (Belgium) and Maastricht (Netherlands). Aachen is just 50 minutes away.
If you prefer to go west, Europe's "capital" Brussels and Antwerp, which are both less than an hour away, are tempting. This optimal location offers the perfect basis for a nice semester abroad with many interesting trips.
In addition, the PXL Hogeschool itself as a university has many good advantages for foreign students. It presents itself as young and dynamic and has a strong focus on internationality.
It has 7200 registered students and is spread across the Limburg region with its nine departments offering 19 different Bachelor's and 3 Master's degree programmes. Most locations are in Hasselt, including the "PXL - Business Department" and the "PXL - Media & Tourism Department".
Autumn semester: Start mid-September

Students can choose courses in Business and Media & Tourism (for TEM). Here you can see an overview of all programs.
Here you will find the brochure "Courses for Exchange Students".
In September and October the University offers a three-week language course "Survival Dutch" with a clear focus on everyday communication for international students. There is also the "English for Incoming Students" language course from September to December.
Deadlines for submitting application documents to the International Office:
31/01 for the winter semester
31/05 for the summer semester
Please note that the deadlines vary between partner universities - it may take a while before you hear from the partner university.
Based on your grades, your letter of motivation and your language skills, the International Office will decide on your application to our partner university. Once you are nominated, you will receive information on the online application procedure.
We have an ERASMUS partnership with the PXL and a certain number of exchange places per semester. You can apply for these places.
The ERASMUS application procedure is divided into two steps:
Step 1: Application to the EBC University
You apply to us for a place at university and for the ERASMUS scholarship. Please register at the International Office and hand in the following documents:
- Letter of motivation in English (one page maximum); include up to two alternative ERASMUS partners in the last paragraph of your cover letter, in which you would be interested if we had to cancel your first request.
- Performance record of the EBC Hochschule (via the virtual campus)
The best applications will be selected from all applicants of the EBC University, it counts academic achievements, language skills and the quality of your motivation letter, in which you show that you have dealt with your desired university.
We will inform the successful students by email and ask them to explicitly accept their place.
If you accept the place, we will nominate you at the partner university and only then will you apply with the regular application documents for the university, see step 2.
If you have received a rejection, you will automatically be placed in the procedure for moving up to the alternative universities of your choice or we will endeavour to offer you an alternative. We will then send you an offer by email. Once you have accepted the offer, we will nominate you with the partner and only then will you apply to this university with the appropriate documents (see step 2 below).
Step 2: Application to the PXL
After the EBC University has nominated you for the PXL, apply to the host university. You will probably have to upload the following documents:
- Proof of sufficient language skills
- Transcript of Records of the EBC University
- Curriculum vitae in English
- Learning Agreement
Be sure to read the guidelines for online applications to the PXL.
The host university also reserves the right to decide on admission.
You will receive further information about your matriculation from the PXL after your admission.
(Status: 26.04.2018, VvH)
We have an ERASMUS partnership with this university. You can apply for an ERASMUS place (Attention - the number of ERASMUS places is limited).
For the participation in the ERASMUS program, an administration fee of 750,-€ is due. In this case, no further tuition fees will be charged at the ERASMUS university in which the student is enrolled.
Cost of living
According to the DAAD, the cost of living in Belgium is not very different from that in Germany. We are talking about an orientation sum of 750 € per month. There are discounts for student ID cards in many places. The deliberately low travel costs for local public transport are interesting. The cost per trip is about 60 cents per trip. The so-called "Campus Pass" is interesting for students. This allows students unlimited bus rides in Hasselt for only 20€ per year (!).
Students who receive an ERASMUS grant can combine it with the AuslandsBAföG, which is subject to the usual conditions of the AuslandsBAföG. Each Studentenwerk processes applications for a country or region; the Studentenwerk Köln is responsible for Belgium.
At least 20 ECTS have to be completed successfully during the semester abroad for recognition at the EBC Hochschule.
Learning Agreement (LA)
Along with your application, you submit a Learning Agreement (LA) on which you enter courses or modules amounting to at least 20 ECTS credits that you would like to take. The number of credits per course varies between countries and universities, so make sure you get precise information. The International Office will confirm your selection and ask for corrections if necessary. The LA is the basis for the recognition of courses at the EBC Hochschule and is therefore obligatory.
Transcript of Records (ToR)
Your Transcript of Records, the semester abroad, proves that you have successfully completed the course. You present the original transcript to the International Office after the semester abroad.
The average of your performances is converted according to the modified Bavarian formula. 20 ECTS are hereby recognised and are included in the overall grade of your studies.
Here you can find further information about the conversion.
The following information is subject to change, as visa requirements are subject to change. Before applying for a visa, be sure to visit the website of the Belgian embassy and find out about the exact and current conditions!
Citizens of EU member states do not need a visa to enter Belgium.
All other countries must apply for a visa before departure in order to enter Belgium. You can apply for this at the Belgian embassy or consulate in your home country.
The PXL does not have its own student accommodation, but there is a housing service that helps international students find private accommodation. Useful website:
You must have valid health insurance. If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you are covered also in Belgium. However, to be sure, ask your health insurance company for further details.
